Coordinating health care in the Philippines

Coordinating care for our aging Filipina Sisters is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to others today.

In Quezon City, the Philippines, Sister Erlinda Banzon is in mission as the coordinator of our district health team. She is also a member of the district fundraising team, and involved with the management of our Collantes compound community.

“I enjoy journeying with our Sisters, and most especially with our elderly and sick Sisters,” she shares. “I feel that I have been given these opportunities in order to be closer to them, to become part of their ‘stories’ and to grow as a religious person. The stories of their life and past involvements are like re-experiencing our history and harvesting a wealth of wisdom. What a gift!”

Sister has found that her ministry requires “the mother of all virtues – patience.” She adds, “I continue to grow in my understanding of healing presence. One of the main ingredients of this is gentleness, and this does not come easy when one is overworked. Here, I am continuously challenged to give each Sister the gift of unhurried time.”

“Another beautiful gift to recognize is that, indeed, the best lotion to apply is the oil of human kindness. The necessary ingredients for this are listening and a good sense of humor.”

Sister Erlinda has witnessed how the Community becomes closer when one is in need. Each Sister wants to share her gifts especially during those times. “How beautiful it is to live together in unity. I really have grown in my appreciation of community, and in recognizing how we can be more life-giving to each other.”
