Coordinating formation of interested women in Africa Journeying with African women interested in joining our Community is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to others today. For the past six years, Ghanaian Sister Edith Dug-yi has been serving as our Formation Coordinator in Africa. She works with women in our Candidacy Program in Nairobi, Kenya. Sister Edith says, “Formation for me is one of the pillars of the Society which fosters its continuity into the future. Therefore, I see the need to give my best to it as my commitment to bringing the Society’s healing charism and mission into the future.” “The meaning this ministry holds for me is that it is a call to be open to embrace surprises. It is a call to patience and humility and, indeed, it is a call to transformation,” she adds. “It is a joy to see people grow and blossom after going through resistance, struggles of letting go, and healing, whether they remain as Medical Mission Sisters or move on with their lives.” Sister Edith participated in the gathering of Sisters around Final Vows in Malawi in 2005, and in a study of religious life with a team of Medical Mission Sisters from around the world between 2006 and 2008. “I count myself highly favored,” she shares. “I could sing Mary’s Magnificat as my own to express my joy for the opportunities I have been given to touch deep into the lives of others and my own.” “Being in the formation ministry has enabled me to own my choice of religious life and to live it as best I can. My daily experiences constantly draw me to take a contemplative stance to ponder, like Mary, and to listen to where God is calling me anew,” Sister Edith shares. “Empowering others to enable them to participate in the healing mission of our Society is surely a part of the healing of the whole. Journeying with others gives me the opportunity to touch deep into their lives…and I have been blessed to see the healing that takes place. Witnessing this gives me joy, and leaves me with no doubt that I am participating in and contributing to the healing mission of Christ.” October 15, 2009
