Fifty years of Medical Mission Sisters in Germany

Gathering to honor our history is a way Medical Mission Sisters strengthen our communal bonds and re-commit ourselves to being a healing presence to those in need today.

Our Sisters in Germany marked 50 years of healing presence on June 22, 2008, in Essen. Sister-Doctor Maria Goetzens, District Coordinator in Germany, says, “It was a beautiful celebration. About 50 Sisters from Europe joined us. There were close to 200 people, rejoicing in thanks and gratitude, including Sister Carmelita Perez, our worldwide Society Coordinator.”

A vibrant group, with half their members below age 50, our Sisters in Germany serve as doctors, pastoral counselors, hospital chaplains, social workers, theologians, and therapists. They minister to the sick and dying, elderly persons, children, the homeless, those who cannot hear, women who are trafficked and imprisoned, recovering addicts, and many people who are seeking a deeper spirituality. They also participate in activities for peace, social justice, and interreligious dialogue.

The celebration will continue later this year in Frankfurt, when Sister Agnes Lanfermann, our Sector Coordinator in Europe, and Sister Maria Hohenadl, who serves in Techiman, Ghana, both celebrate their Silver Jubilee. Frankfurt is also home to newly-professed Sisters Tina Becker and Mariotte Hillebrand, who made their First Vows in May, 2008.

Another highlight of this special year is a pilgrimage for Sisters and interested women to Steeg, Austria, the birthplace of our Foundress, Anna Dengel. Taking place from July 21 to 25, it will conclude with a service on Sunday, July 26, with Bishop Manfred Scheuer from Innsbruck.

We send grateful prayers and sincere congratulations to our German Sisters on their golden anniversary!
