Fatima Hospital, Parepare, Indonesia Serving in the only Catholic hospital and nursing school in Parepare is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to others today. Four of our Sisters are in mission at Fatima Hospital in Parepare, South Sulawesi, Indonesia – the only Catholic hospital in the midst of the Muslim population in Parepare. Our Sisters provide both supervisory and supportive services in this general hospital, which is managed by the Archdiocese of Makassar. It also has a nurses’ training school. “The school is one of the best in South Sulawesi, and offers an opportunity for the Sisters to be in touch with youth and vocation work,” explains Sister Suzanne Maschek, our Assistant Society Coordinator, who visited in 2007.
Sister Illigem (Gemma) Susanta serves as general practitioner in the hospital’s outpatient department. She uses alternative health therapies, such as herbal medicine and acupuncture, in her healing ministry. In conjunction with the local government health services, she also cares for persons with leprosy (Hansen’s disease) in the Lauleng Leprosarium, and coordinates the National TB Program in Parepare. The hospital’s Director of Financial Administration is Sister Florentine Supeni Darmoredjo. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors, and helps the Lauleng Leprosarium team with non-medical matters.
Sister Maria Agustine Miyatun is the hospital’s general cashier, and teaches first-semester students in the nursing school. Sister Orpa Biring does pastoral care work, and is treasurer for the local health insurance program of Fatima Hospital.
