Faithful stewardship Ensuring good stewardship of our finances in North America is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. Sister Helen Lembeck and the North American Finance Department serve a vital role for our Community. As Sister explains, “The Finance and Accounting offices in Philadelphia are the essential ‘arms’ in keeping up with current business, revenues, expenses, budgets as well as financial planning. ‘Money’ has a way of being involved in almost any activity, so we in the finance field are often asked to sit in on meetings about new undertakings, as well as to help monitor the financial picture for ongoing mission and ministry.” As our Chief Financial Officer in North America, Sister Helen oversees all budgeting and distribution of funds, and chairs the North America Finance Committee. She also is a member of several finance and investment committees, and links with our international finance team as the representative from North America. “Currently the Philadelphia office is responsible for the financial operations of Medical Mission Sisters in North America as well as handling the Custodial funds of our projects and areas around the world, receiving and distributing funds for them. In this area, we work with the Mission Development Center to help distribute the funds received to the intended recipient. We also keep up with investment managers and custodians looking after our retirement funds.”
With her MBA in Global Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Sister Helen is well-versed in finance. She previously served as our Sector Treasurer in Africa, and was District Treasurer in East Africa, and in the Eastern and Western Districts of North America. She has been a part of our leadership Assembly for the past 10 years, either as an elected member or participant observer.
She shares, “What makes my job easier for sure is the fact that we have wonderful donors and benefactors who have supported our ministry and are co-missionaries with us around the world. Thanks to their faithful support, we are tasked with looking for the best stewardship of the gifts God and they have given; to use them wisely now and have sufficient for the future.”
Sister Helen has also been on our global General Finance Team for 12 years. “This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how other areas of our Society are faring financially, and to contribute to or participate in our Generalate responsibility for overall care for our members, ministries and healing charism.”
