Celebrating 360 years in mission

The 7 Medical Mission Sisters from North America who are celebrating Diamond and Golden Jubilees in 2007 represent a combined 360 years in mission.

On June 10th, we are honoring 7 Medical Mission Sisters from North America who mark 60- and 50-year anniversaries of their First Profession of Vows in 2007. Please join us in congratulations, prayers, and thanks. A Mass and reception is being held at our North American Headquarters in Philadelphia in recognition of these Sisters’ service:

60-year Jubilarian:

Sister Camillus Healy, a native of Newtown, Iowa, served in Ghana for 44 years as a nurse-midwife and supervisor. When she returned to the U.S., Sister became part of our Formation Community for several years. She now lives with two Medical Mission Sisters at the Natural Family Planning Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

50-year Jubilarians:

Sister Phyllis Backer, from Ferdinand, Indiana, served in Pakistan for almost 30 years, directing nursing, midwifery, and community health services. She has also ministered in Philadelphia, PA; Baltimore, MD; and Washington, DC. Sister is currently the Residential Care Coordinator for our Sisters living at Holy Redeemer Infirmary in Huntingdon Valley, PA.

Sister Joan Marie Doud, born in Philadelphia, PA, spent 45 years in mission in Uganda, in a variety of public health and primary health care ministries. As Director of our Health Center in Rubanda, Uganda, she oversaw the care of thousands of patients. She recently returned to Philadelphia.

Sister Joan Foley, from Arlington, VA, was in mission for 15 years in Pakistan, as supervisor of a laboratory school and District Superior. She also served in North Carolina and Georgia, and in a number of leadership positions for our North American Community. In 1991 Sister Joan founded the Connections Job Development/Placement Program in New Port Richey, Florida, which she continues to direct.

Sister Maria Hornung, a native of New Orleans, held a variety of pharmacist and hospital secretary positions in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria, as well as severalleadership positions within our Community. She currently works at the Interfaith Center of Philadelphia, and as our Lifewright retreat and renewal Coordinator. Her book on Interreligious Dialogue is due out later this year.

Sister Patrice McSweeney, a nurse whose family hails from the Los Angeles area, ministered for almost 40 years in Venezuela. Sister now lives and works in Philadelphia, where she has volunteered in pastoral ministry, and at a women’s prison. She serves in our Mission Development Center, visits the sick, and is involved in a literacy program.

Sister Regina Rowan, born in Philadelphia, PA, directed clinical laboratories for 8 years in Venezuela, and taught microbiology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She lived in Boston for 26 years, where she was Executive Director of our Office for Responsible Investment, and a member of our Finance Committee. Sister Regina recently returned to the Philadelphia area.
