Maintaining our North American Archives

Preserving the history of our Community for future generations is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to others today.

Several Sisters at our North American Headquarters work in the Archives Department, where our history is preserved. Sister Carmel Petonyak has been active in this ministry for 22 years. She became involved after she returned from 31 years of nursing service in India.

“I enjoyed it from the moment I started,” she says of her work in Archives. “There is always so much to be done.”

Every part of the world where we are in mission keeps its own set of archived documents and photographs. Our London Generalate cares for Society-wide archival material. In North America, official and historical documents and photos are stored in special boxes in a repository room at our Administration Building in Philadelphia.

Material to be archived comes from our Administration Building offices, and from other offices and houses in North America. Sister Carmel sorts through the boxes and gets everything in order by date and subject. She also prepares summaries of the material for entry on the computer. In all, almost 85 years of Medical Mission Sisters’ history is included.

Sister Carmel shares, “It’s very interesting. I’ve found out parts of the history of Medical Mission Sisters in North America that I might have never known.”

She adds, “I am helping to preserve our history for future generations of our Sisters, and for researchers who are interested in various aspects of our healing mission.”
