Haven for Ecological and Alternative Living (HEAL)

Creating an ecological center for reflection and study is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to others today.

In Capulaan, Villasis, the Philippines, 4 hours north of Manila, our Sisters are creating an ecological center on two hectares (about 5 acres) of donated land. They named this center the Haven for Ecological and Alternative Living (HEAL). Sisters Anne Bellosillo, Eufrecina Briones, Natividad Cristobal, Rosalinda Maog, and Lynn Kaum are in mission there.

HEAL took shape from the words of the Filipino Bishops, “We will not be successful in our efforts to develop a new attitude towards the natural world unless we are sustained and nourished by a new vision. This vision must blossom forth from our understanding of the world as God intends it to be. We can know the shape of this world by looking at how God originally fashioned our world and laid it out before us.”

The first time our Sisters set foot on this land, they experienced a peaceful "aura" about it. They wanted this place to awaken in others the beauty and sacredness of God’s creation, and His call to bring healing to Mother Earth.

HEAL propagates the New Story of Creation as a means of awakening humans to the ecological crisis in our world, and of giving direction for action. The educational program is integrated with work and prayer. Affordable alternative healing modalities are made accessible and available to the wider community. In addition, the complex operates in a sustainable manner through:

- organic farming methods
- architecture that uses renewable native materials, such as bamboo and cogon thatch
- renewable sources of energy, such as solar, wind and bio-gas
- preservation of biodiversity
- zero-waste management

The land is cultivated using the concepts of permaculture, which places priority on the permanent sustainment of the land, and the life grown on it.
