Celebrating 250 years in mission The five Medical Mission Sisters from North America who are celebrating Golden Jubilees in 2009 represent a combined 250 years in mission. On June 14th, we are honoring 5 Medical Mission Sisters from North America who are marking the 50th anniversary of their First Profession of Vows in 2008. (Our 60-year Jubilarians will be honored in August.) Please join us in congratulations, prayers, and thanks. A Mass and reception is being held at our North American Headquarters in Philadelphia in recognition of these Sisters’ service: Sister Jane Fell, a native of Council Bluffs, Nebraska, served as a nurse and administrator in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and the U.S. She also worked as a primary health care coordinator in Ghana and Uganda for over 20 years. Sister’s ministries continue today in many parts of the world with the help of people she trained. She recently repatriated to the U.S. Sister Marlene Crouse, who hails from Buffalo, New York, helped to set up Holy Family Hospital, the first integrated Atlanta hospital, and later directed its in-service education. She also served in Pakistan. Sister Marlene moved to Boston 30 years ago, and became an advocate and coordinator of services for the poor and homeless. Sister Sheila McGinnis, from Troy, New York, was a nurse-midwife and supervisor at Holy Family Hospital in Quinhon, Vietnam. Forced to evacuate in 1975, she later worked with refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia. She served as our Community’s North American Superior, and as the Co-Director of the Center for Human Integration in Philadelphia. Sister Judy Garbaccio, a native of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, served as a nurse, manager, and community health coordinator in Philadelphia, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. After ministering as our District Formation Coordinator in Ethiopia, she repatriated to the U.S. and helped to develop the Church Ministry Institute of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She remains involved with liturgy planning and spiritual counseling. Sister Mary Gavin, who hails from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was a nurse-midwife and nursing supervisor in Bangladesh and Philadelphia. In the 1970s, she began a Contemplative Arts Ministry which continues today. She offers Sisters and laypersons classes in such topics as Chinese Brush Painting and T’ai Chi Moving Meditation to help balance mind, body and spirit. June 1, 2009
