Ayushya Promoting life at a center for healing and integration in Kerala, India, is one of hundreds of ways in which Medical Mission Sisters around the world try to be a healing presence to those in need today. Twenty-three years ago, our Sisters in Kerala, India, founded Ayushya, a center whose name means fullness of life or promoting life. Ayushya is open to all people, and accommodates both groups and individuals for a variety of programs and treatments. Four of our Sisters are in mission there today. “The peaceful and conducive atmosphere enriches everyone who comes here for meditation and quiet. Away from the maddening crowd, they are able to forget the stress and strain of life and experience stillness in depth,” shares Sister Eliza Kuppozhackel, the program coordinator. The holistic health clinic at Ayushya, open six days a week, offers a variety of alternative healing modalities, non-drug therapies, and counseling. India’s traditional systems of herbal medicine, and age-old practices of yoga and meditation, are integrated into the health programs. Groups of women, children, and young girls meet at the center regularly, and special retreats and training programs are conducted for a number of other groups.
Our Sisters grow over 400 varieties of medicinal plants in Ayushya’s large garden. “We prepare some herbal home remedies and medicated oil for treating simple health problems. Aloe vera preparations are very much in demand as a tonic for revitalizing the immune system. There is a growing interest among the people in these simple but effective herbal preparations,” Sister Eliza explains. A booklet shows how to prepare these remedies at home.
Ayushya’s classes and meditation sessions are frequently held outdoors. As Sister Eliza notes, “Nature provides the external atmosphere needed for internal silence and deeper exploration of self. The animal farm, the evergreen trees and vegetation provide newness of life, and also give an ashram-like atmosphere for the seekers of healing and wholeness.”
